BRASS Management Application Development Kit for JAVA

The BRASS™ Management Application Development Kit for Java™-language Development from SNMP Research, Inc., is a software toolkit that simplifies developing SNMP network management applications using the Java language. These network management applications are typically deployed in an enterprise’s network operations center (NOC) for use by network operations personnel. In contrast, Java-language SNMP agents can be developed and deployed in network devices using the Subagent Development Kit for Java-language Development.

This development kit provides the following features:

Develop SNMP network management applications using the Java language.
Create management applications with easy-to-use classes and methods.
Fully support SNMPv3 in Java applications.
Send and receive ICMP and SNMP requests.
Receive SNMP notifications.
Create both Java applications and Java applets.
Build upon SNMP Research’s proven industrial-strength BRASS Server and BRASS™ Management Application Development Kit.

The development kit includes the following elements:

The BRASS Server in binary with the integrated Java Management Adapter, to which management applications connect and communicate.
The SNMP Libraries, Utilities, and MIB Tools in binary.
The BRASS libraries in binary.
The SNMP Utilities are delivered in Java- and C- language source code form as examples of how to use the BRASS API for creating management applications.
Extensive BRASS API Documentation.

This combination allows developers to quickly develop management applications without the need for full source code.

Architecture

The figure below illustrates the communication between Java-language management applications and an SNMP Agent. The Java-language management application (either an applet or an application), issues ICMP requests, SNMP requests, or other requests. These requests are communicated over a TCP connection to the BRASS Server.

The BRASS Server then constructs the SNMP requests and issues them to the specified SNMP agent. SNMP replies follow the reverse path.

The BRASS Server can support numerous TCP connections from Java-language management applications. The BRASS Server caches MIB information, caches SNMPv3 authentication information, and allows notifications received on UDP port 162 to be distributed to multiple BRASS Client applications.

The BRASS™ Management Application Development Kit for Java™-language Development offers a distributed architecture, one that employs the strength of the C-language features in the BRASS Server combined with the advantage of programming Java-language management applications. This distributed architecture is thought to be computationally more efficient than a pure Java solution because:

Bit manipulation, like that required for SNMP ASN.1 BER encoding, is difficult in the Java language, and
The Java Virtual Machine's interpretation of the Java byte codes magnifies the computational intensity of the already intense SNMPv3 authentication and privacy algorithms.
